カラーオーダーについて質問を頂くことが多いので、こちらのブログにまとめてみました。
「革の種類」についても実は複数ありますので、そちらと併せて参考にしてみてください。
革の種類とカラー
Yonichimarusanでは大きく分けて4種類の牛革を使用しています。
それぞれの特徴と、それぞれのカラーについてご説明いたします。
・ピットヌメ革
・ソフトヌメ革
・ブライドルレザー
・クロムレザー

ピットヌメ革
生の皮をレザー（革）の状態に加工する、鞣し（なめし）の工程で、ピット層と呼ばれるプールのような場所におよそ1カ月間、タンニンに漬け込むことで作られるピットヌメ革。
植物性タンニンで月日をかけて鞣すことで、堅牢な仕上がりとなり、型崩れをしにくいのが特徴です。
日に当てたり、触ったりすることで、内部に含まれたタンニンが染み出し、柔らかくなったり艶が増すなど、経年変化しやすい素材でもあります。渋めのカラーも魅力です。
このままでは固すぎて使いにくいため、振動を加えて柔らかくほぐす加工や、最終工程でオイルを付加し、1ｍｍの厚みに揃えることで、力の弱い方でも扱えるよう手馴染みをよくしています。

ソフトヌメ革
ピット層ではなく、「ドラム」や「たいこ」と呼ばれる回転式の大きな樽の中でタンニンに浸され、鞣されます。ピットヌメ革よりも柔らかいことが特徴で、Yonichimarusanでは染色が鮮やかなカラーを主に取り扱っています。
ピットヌメ革同様、柔らかくなったり艶が増すなどの経年変化が楽しめます。発色の良いカラーがお好みの方や、最初から柔らかい風合いで使いたい方にお勧めです。
残念ながらこちらの仕入先はすでに廃業してしまいましたので、在庫がなくなり次第、取り扱いを終了いたします。

ブライドルレザー
ブライドルレザーはそもそも「馬具用の革」として作られました。
人間以上の力を持つ馬を操るため、ブライドルレザーはとても堅牢に作られています。
グリースと呼ばれる油、ロウなどでブレンドされたものをじっくりと塗り込むことで、堅牢性と多少の撥水性を持たせているのです。
革表面に白い粉のようなもの見られますが、これはグリースが表面に浮き出たもので、「ブルーム」と呼ばれています。
そのままでは固くて小物には向かないので、1mmという薄さに揃えることで、多少柔らかさを実現しています。
・ブライドルブラック
クロムレザー
現在流通している牛革のほとんどがクロムレザーだと言われています。
鞣しの工程で、クロムと呼ばれる化学薬品が用いられます。
こちらも大きな回転式のドラムに原皮とクロム鞣剤を入れて、一気に鞣されます。
鞣しの工程自体はおよそ1日程度で済んでしまうので、ヌメ革に比べると比較的安価な革であると言えるでしょう。
柔軟性や弾力性に優れ、染色もしやすいことから、様々な表情を生み出すことができます。
それ単体では柔らかすぎる為、あえて薄く加工することをしていません。
また、切りっぱなしのデザインが特徴ののYonichimarusanでは、クロムレザー単体では強度が足りないため、パーツ使いのみでお願いしております。
経年変化があまりありませんので、汚れや劣化にも強く、お手入れもあまり必要ありません。
こちらも現在取り扱いの在庫で終了します。

We often receive questions about color ordering, so we've compiled the information in this blog post.
There are actually several types of leather available, so please refer to this information as well.
Types of Leather and Colors
Yonichimarusan uses four main types of cowhide leather.
We will explain the characteristics of each and the available colors.
・Pit veg-tanned leather

Pit veg-tanned leather
Pit veg-tanned leather is made by soaking raw hides in a pool-like area called a "pit pool" for about a month during the tanning process, which transforms the raw hides into leather.
By tanning with vegetable tannins over time, it results in a robust finish and is characterized by its resistance to deformation.
It is also a material that easily undergoes aging, becoming softer and glossier as the tannins contained within seep out when exposed to sunlight or touched. The subdued colors are also attractive.
Because it is too hard to use as is, we apply a process of softening it by adding vibrations and adding oil in the final stage, and adjusting the thickness to 1 mm, making it easy to handle even for those with less strength.

Soft veg-tanned leather
Instead of a pit pool, this leather is tanned by soaking it in tannins in a large rotating barrel called a "drum" or "taiko." It is characterized by being softer than pit-tanned leather, and Yonichimarusan mainly handles brightly colored leathers.
Similar to pit-tanned leather, you can enjoy the aging process, such as becoming softer and glossier. It is recommended for those who prefer brightly colored leathers or those who want a soft texture from the start.
Unfortunately, this supplier has already gone out of business, so we will discontinue handling this type of leather once the stock runs out.

Bridle Leather
Bridle leather was originally made as "leather for horse tack."
To control horses, which possess strength far exceeding that of humans, bridle leather is made to be very robust.
It is made robust and somewhat water-repellent by carefully applying a blend of oils and waxes called grease.
A white, powdery substance can be seen on the surface of the leather; this is the grease that has risen to the surface and is called "bloom."
Because it is too hard for small items as is, we have made it slightly softer by processing it to a thickness of 1mm.

Chrome Leather
It is said that most of the cowhide currently in circulation is chrome leather.
In the tanning process, a chemical called chromium is used.
Here too, the raw hides and chrome tanning agents are placed in a large rotating drum and tanned all at once.
Since the tanning process itself takes only about a day, it can be said that it is a relatively inexpensive leather compared to vegetable-tanned leather.
It is excellent in flexibility and elasticity, and because it is easy to dye, it can produce a variety of appearances.
Because it is too soft on its own, we do not intentionally process it thinly.
Also, in Yonichimarusan, which features a raw-edge design, chrome leather alone is not strong enough, so we only use it for parts.
It does not change much over time, so it is resistant to dirt and deterioration, and requires little maintenance.
This will also be discontinued once current stock runs out.
